mirror box is the solo analog synth project of dallas musician sean kirkpatrick. with an extensive resume that includes keyboard duties for kill rock stars 00s noise rock band the paper chase as well as his concurrent projects, dark post-punk-synth-rockers nervous curtains and darkwave duo little beards, mirror box is kirkpatricks first foray into the purely electronic realm. blending together elements of giallo moodiness, dub texture, techno propulsion, a passing nod to your favorite wave music, and a flare for the kosmiche, mirror box debut release, minimal compliance ep, is a tour de force of the veteran musicians exploration of a wide range of influences and experience. released by dallas-based gavin guthrie (tx connect)’s tru (texas recordings underground), the 5-track ep kicks off with the immediately-gripping title track. a huge mid-tempo 808 beat drives the menacing moog bass while cosmic synths explore the skies over gritty, urban terrain. the body, grounded by its stuttering and singular bass line, is an expansive reworking of a track from little beards debut album which features nan kirkpatrick on the release’s only vocal appearance. side a closes with destabilized agent, a retro-futurist dream that effortlessly voyages from sagans cosmos to a melodic minimal wave refrain. while the first sides lush synthesizers and sophisticated syncopation are somewhat of a departure for tru, a label that has so far defined itself by bringing the electronic sounds of texas underground warehouse scene to dance floors across the sea, the flip side of the record is where the four hits the floor. grifter react opens with a hard kick and electro zaps, letting the rhythm take the lead until a distorted bass finally enters to provide the hook. minimal compliance ep finale, critical blitz, weaves together all of mirror box finer elements into a concise mission statement

this latest work from vanity productions is a turbulence steadied to rest with care, and marks a critical high point in the project’s evolution. as the nom de plume of posh isolation’s co-founder christian stadsgaard, there is a deeply private yet fiercely empathic quality to “only the grains of love remain”. pirouetting between his collaborative work with loke rahbek as damien dubrovnik, as well as the empire line with varg and iron sight, to name just stadsgaard’s most recent activity, the inwardness reserved for vanity productions is perhaps a necessary step. that the emotive experimentation should generate such a touching soliloquy is an arresting watermark, presenting only the grains of love remain as the most eloquent work of the project to date.

“aktuel musik” is the second release from kyo, a duet of hannes norrvide and frederik valentin. norrvide is best known as the protagonist of synth trio lust for youth, though his recent solo techno productions under the guise of norin have also been met with critical praise. together with danish music’s enfant terrible, valentin, whose musical history is as difficult to trace as it is to comprehend, kyo is a project nourished by the orbit of two individuals around impassioned collectives.

the 30d records machinery does not stop. a new stylistic adventure has been concretized in the new label’s series “eyes have it”, which will be conducted by the well-known sonar and 30d’s resident dj, angel molina, as a&r. the lucio fulci’s movies iconic scary-eyes synthesizes the series essence perfectly. “eyes have it” builds the fundamentals for the boundless experimentation, lightlessness, cold and mechanical dynamics. the ep “shelter” is the very first result of this new proposal, an incontestable work signed by isolated lines. the swiss artist has a solid background in underground music throughout various projects, in and outside of electronics. that means a wider creative resources that can be easily noticeable, for instance, in the music harmonies. avant-garde, solid sound and savoir-faire, that is what defines the isolated lines production. “shelter” ep stylistic codes are crystal clear, brazen obstinacy of the rhythm base which sets the basis for epic distorted textures, that may become deeply emotional, like in the cases of “onshore” and “landfall”. steadfast rhythmic cycles on slamming sound mantras. furthermore, the ep includes an industrially nervous revision of “onshore” constructed by 30drop. isolated lines’ “shelter” ep is an utterly flawless starting point for this strongly promising new 30d series. so henceforth, keep always an eye on “eyes have it”!

pale blue, the duo of elizabeth wight and mike simonetti, released their debut album too much critical acclaim back in 2015. they come together once again with their latest ep you stopped dying due to drop on crosstown rebels in february. the you stopped dying ep takes influence from shoegaze groups like slowdive and my bloody valentine and moves it to the dance floor. the result is a strange hybrid that some have called technogaze. this would never work if liz wasnt such a strong vocalist. her amazing vocal range makes it easy. mike simonetti pale blue is a hypnotic affair, the driving bass sitting perfectly under wight’s powerful yet ethereal vocals. daughter of babylon takes the record into heavier techno territory with its thudding bass and wights breathy vocals delicately layered over the top. on the flip side love is an unapologetically industrial number with screeching synths that echo around wights vocals. simonetti and wight have each earned their musical stripes in their own rights. simonetti founded the hugely popular italians do it better as well as his own successful record label, 2mr. he’s released a slew of records on highly regarded imprints such as me me me, correspondant and public release, and enjoys a fruitful career as a touring dj, which shows no sign of abating. wight has previously lent her exhilarating vocals to the west coast band, silver hands of which she was once one half
